Q&A for New Stitchers

Q&A for New Stitchers

Is learning how to needlepoint one of your resolutions for 2025? Stitching is a relaxing and rewarding pastime that you’ll enjoy for years to come, but as with any new skill, you may have a few questions before you get started. At Elizabeth Bradley Design, our expert team is committed to supporting you along every step of your journey. We’ve compiled a list of our most commonly asked questions from beginners—read on to see if we’ve answered yours!

What is Victorian Cross Stitch?

This traditional British stitching method was used during the Victorian era to create thick, durable pieces of needlework. It is quick and easy to work, and won’t pull on the canvas or cause distortion. You can find written instructions in every kit, or view them online with accompanying video tutorials.

When should I use the Reverse Stitch?

Reverse Victorian Cross Stitch is best for long vertical sections of a design, such as flower stems. Get step-by-step instructions here.

What is the Basketweave Stitch?

The Basketweave Stitch is made up of tent stitches that move diagonally across the canvas, keeping the tension even as you work. All kits in our Kirk & Bradley for Elizabeth Bradley and Needlepoint To Go Collections use this technique. Get step-by-step instructions here.

What does my kit include?

Your kit contains a printed canvas, two needles & a needle threader, full stitch instructions, full size colour-coded chart & wool colour cards, premium hand-spun tapestry wool, and a dust bag.

Are there any other supplies I need?

Whilst every kit includes all of the materials you’ll need to complete that design, we also offer a range of accessories to make your stitching experience even more seamless. Stock up on supplies such as magnets, needle threaders, scissors, wool organisers, and more.

Where is my kit made?

In 1986, our founder, Elizabeth Bradley, first opened up shop in Anglesey, Wales. To this day, we continue to honour our English heritage by constructing kits in Wales, with wool spun and dyed in North England & canvases stitch-printed in Devon.

What are the benefits of using printed canvas?

Our precision-printed canvases use 100% accurate proprietary technology you won’t find anywhere else. This means that designs always line up exactly with the chart card, and stitching intersections will be hassle-free.

What is the difference between starter and mini kits?

Starter kits are 3x5 inches in size and feature simplified designs for beginners to familiarise themselves with Victorian Cross Stitch. Mini kits can be just as intricate as our full-sized designs but are 6x6 inches in size.

How do I finish my project once I’ve completed stitching the canvas?

There are a number of wonderful finishing options to choose from, including cushions, carpets, display boxes, and more! You can opt to finish the piece yourself using our online educational resources, take our master joining class for a detailed look at carpet finishing, or send your completed canvas to our team of experts to finish for you.

What is EB Insider Rewards?

Our free rewards program allows you to earn points on every purchase you make, which can be redeemed for free products or gift vouchers. Get bonus points when you follow us on social media and share your birthday with us.
